How to set a tax rate on a Reserved Product
This article is for anyone who needs to know how to set a tax rate on a reserved product.
We have special products that are in our system and are tied to functions in our other modules. Because of this, they are in a reserved section of products with dedicated negative SKUs and names. They have limited editing available to ensure they still function with the other modules. One of the editable options is their tax rate. By default, they will have the tax rate associated with the location if they are a regular product. Others may be tax-exempt by default, but it can be difficult to determine why some parts of reports are set to tax-exempt. A custom tax with a more understandable or separate name to be more understandable in reports can be made and set to 0%.

Then the corresponding reserved product can be set to that tax. To access it,
Go to the Products module.
Click on Settings.
Click on the Reserved Products tab. You can find House Account Payments there.
Select the product you want to set a custom tax rate on.
Click Manage.
This will bring up the window to manage the reserved product. You will need to click the Customize button to edit the taxes that will override the default taxes for the location.
This will take you to the Tax Override window where you will need to set the location and tax for the reserved product.
Use the drop down to select all locations that the special tax will apply to. If you do not have multiple locations this step can be skipped as it will already have that location selected.
Put a check next to the tax or taxes you want to set for the reserved product.
Click Save when done.
You can click the Reset to Default button to clear any taxes set for the product.
Click Save on the Manage Products window to save all changes made.
In reports, the tax will now show up as that name for easier accounting.
